ORGANIC PRODUCTION

A matter of principle: organic winemaking

In organic farming we have always believed, always and against all odds. Partially due to its landlocked location, but also because of its agricultural history, Irpinia is probably one of the most pristine areas left in Italy. Yet the difficulties of the climate (rain and frost for a good part of the year) forced us to take the path of organic winemaking gradually, and we proceeded slowly.

Our values

Respect for the earth is an essential value we should all share. We are convinced that it is simply better for everyone to try to make our business a little greener every day.

Our organic approach goes further than just having certified organic wines and extra-virgin olive oils. Here are the initiatives that next to organic winemaking make us increasingly sustainable:

Energy and solar efficiency

We have installed two photovoltaic systems, and two solar plants, both on the wine cellar and on our B&B farmhouse. Together they produce over two thirds of our electricity and hot water needs. Furthermore, the B&B has the highest energy efficiency class thanks to the most innovative building insulation applications.

We have been working organically for years with our olive groves, in 2011 we started a first attempt to convert part of the vineyards to organic farming and the first harvest was one of the most satisfying ever made. Abundant grapes, conferring a beautiful structure to the wine. A hot and dry vintage made the task of organic winemaking easy for us.

However, in the following years we learned that to succeed with organic farming requires a lot of work, a constant presence and control in the vineyard, leading to significantly higher expenses per hectare. Since before the 2018 harvest we have managed to start the conversion to organic for all our vineyards, and we have recently released our first organic wine: the Fiano di Avellino 2019 DOCG.

Rainwater collection

The installation of a rainwater collector has allowed us to save considerably on water consumption, not only in the wine cellar but also in our B&B.

Biomass and heating

We have an innovative machine that allows us to transform the biomass coming from the pruning of our olive groves, vineyards and orchards (leaves, branches and other) to pellet. In this way we can heat the houses that are part of Le Masciare Estate.

Respect for the earth is now an essential value we should all share. We are convinced that it is simply better for everyone to try to make our business a little greener every day.
